OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE GRAND ROUNDS

Part of AOCOPM's Midyear program is to conduct an "Occupational Medicine Grand Rounds," in other words, a health and safety worksite survey tour.  This is normally a three-hour learning experience in which a company occupational medicine physician, a health & safety officer, or similar leader, guides us through a structured, practical on-site exercise; physicians are given the opportunity to study public health issues, occupational exposures, risks, legal implications, and mitigating measures.  Lessons learned are applied to the physician's own situation, be it government, industry, military or private practice.

Although the learning objectives vary from year to year, depending on the industry studied, they are kept consistent with our worksite survey module:
  • Develop a strategy for conducting a workplace walk-through survey.
  • Organize a format for recording essential observations.
  • Consider the unique characteristics of various industries in evaluating worksites.
  • Consider applicable governmental regulations in their assessments.
  • Explore disaster preparation and mitigation strategies.
  • Discuss worksite illness outbreak risk and mitigation strategies.
  • Effectively utilize information resources
In recent years, we've conducted grand rounds at:
  • GM (Fairfax, KS)
  • Clarios, formerly Johnson Controls (Tampa, FL)
  • Swift Trucking (Phoenix)
